"Shawnsey Walker has been charged with assault and
battery on Andrew Fanning, an engineer who visited the
club last Halloween with two friends, another engineer
and an off-duty Michigan state trooper.
Fanning's attorney, Marcia McClure, said her client,
who is white, and his companions, including an Asian
American, exchanged words with Walker, who made an ethnic
slur and ordered them out. As they were leaving, McClure
said, Walker ripped Fanning's shirt, then beat him."
"Now, McClure and other attorneys have found
a way to cash in on the psyche-shattering cases of cemeteries
piling bodies three-deep, confusing remains or damaging
graves with equipment. "
"A Wayne County jury awarded $6 million
Tuesday to the family of a woman struck and killed by
a Detroit police scout car in a 1998 accident... The 2-week
trial was before Wayne County Circuit Judge Louis Simmons.
The jury took about two hours Tuesday to reach the verdict."
DETROIT POLICE PROBE COP CRASH THAT HURT 2 PEDESTRIANS:
"Two Detroiters remained hospitalized Sunday
after they were hit by a police car Saturday night on
crowded Jefferson Avenue -- a weekend hot spot for road-clogging
cruising."
"Bingham Farms attorneys Marcia B. McClure and Henry
Langberg credited much more than this for helping them
secure a $5.25 million judgment -- the fourth largest
verdict reported to Lawyers Weekly in 2000 -- against
the Detroit Police Department for an accident which
resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
The attorneys spent more than two years preparing
their case against the police, with McClure musing that
it 'almost felt like a child -- and you always do what's
best for your child.'"
$600 PER HOUR FEE DEEMED REASONABLE; LAWYERS EXPERIENCE,
OTHER FACTORS KEY:
"McClure added that defense counsel tried
to minimize the case to support their argument that the
fees were excessive. "The defense claimed the attorney
fees were excessive because this was a garden variety
auto case," she said. "It wasn't. There were
22 witnesses and several attorneys."
