SUIT CHARGES BEATINGS BY CLUB BOUNCERS:

"Shawnsey Walker has been charged with assault and battery on Andrew Fanning, an engineer who visited the club last Halloween with two friends, another engineer and an off-duty Michigan state trooper.

Fanning's attorney, Marcia McClure, said her client, who is white, and his companions, including an Asian American, exchanged words with Walker, who made an ethnic slur and ordered them out. As they were leaving, McClure said, Walker ripped Fanning's shirt, then beat him."

JURY AWARDS $6 MILLION IN '98 COP CAR FATALITY:

"A Wayne County jury awarded $6 million Tuesday to the family of a woman struck and killed by a Detroit police scout car in a 1998 accident... The 2-week trial was before Wayne County Circuit Judge Louis Simmons. The jury took about two hours Tuesday to reach the verdict."

"Two Detroiters remained hospitalized Sunday after they were hit by a police car Saturday night on crowded Jefferson Avenue -- a weekend hot spot for road-clogging cruising."

POLICE NEGLIGENCE NETS $5.25M VERDICT:

"Bingham Farms attorneys Marcia B. McClure and Henry Langberg credited much more than this for helping them secure a $5.25 million judgment -- the fourth largest verdict reported to Lawyers Weekly in 2000 -- against the Detroit Police Department for an accident which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

The attorneys spent more than two years preparing their case against the police, with McClure musing that it 'almost felt like a child -- and you always do what's best for your child.'"

"McClure added that defense counsel tried to minimize the case to support their argument that the fees were excessive. "The defense claimed the attorney fees were excessive because this was a garden variety auto case," she said. "It wasn't. There were 22 witnesses and several attorneys."
